Joseph Schwartz was born in 1938 in New York City. Both of his parents were political activists. The family moved to California in 1946 and Schwartz graduated from University of California at Berkeley with a Ph. D. in physics in 1964. He participated in civil rights activities in Hattiesburg from September 1964 to March 1965. He taught in the CUNY system until he moved to London in 1975.
